Dissertation: The Evaluation of Motion Palpation

The Evaluation of the Palpation of Motion was originally published as an undergraduate dissertation for the osteopathic course at BCOM in 1989. It was a highly unusual study in this field as it used a machine to simulate the movement of the spine with some quite complex arrangements to determine what the study subjects were actually feeling. The intention was to demonstrate a linear relationship between experience in osteopathy and the ability to perceive subtle movement. Surprisingly, the study showed quite a complex relationship and not the straight line that had been expected from earlier static studies. The work has been reproduced here in full, but without the technical appendix on the machine.
